I set up Barnickle Furniture after graduating in December 2010 from the prestigious “Central School of Speech and Drama” with a degree in Scenic Art, Painting For The Stage and Screen.
After an intense training in painting for various theatre shows, seeing the detailed pieces of set being skipped at the end of the show made me look for a way I could apply my skills to something that would be appreciated in a more intimate environment and be treasured for years to come. After graduating I painted some old furniture for a newly built cob house and it became clear that I could transfer my skills from theatre painting to furniture painting – and Barnickle Furniture was born.
Barnickle’s studio space occupies a large barn at Summerdown Farm in rural East Devon. The furniture is currently sourced from recycling centres, local markets and donations. I see the potential to bring life back to furniture that looks as though it has long gone past it’s sell by date. The satisfaction of seeing the before and after of a piece is what I love most. The gallery displays various bespoke pieces, ranging from pretty kitchen dressers to retro lockers and fun furniture for childrens bedrooms.
